Founded in 1874 by Reverend Peter Leonard Thevis, St. Roch Cemetery is steeped in legend. During a yellow fever outbreak in 1868, Rev. Thevis prayed to St. Roch, the Patron Saint of Good Health, promising to build a chapel if his congregation was spared. Miraculously, no one in his community died. Today, the cemetery features a chapel and a shrine, where visitors leave personal tokens of gratitude—like braces, glass eyes, and dental plates—on display in the chapel, which is only open on the first Friday of each month from 11:00 am to noon.
